What is "IM a Librarian"?
"IM a Librarian" is the College of Charleston Libraries' instant messaging reference service. College of Charleston reference librarians offer live, real-time research assistance using AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), MSN Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger.

What do I need to get started?
If you already have an account with AOL, MSN, or Yahoo instant messaging services, add our screenname cofclib to your contact list.

If you are new to instant messenging, you will need to register for an account and screenname and either download free software or use a web-based version.

  • AOL Instant Messenger (or AIM Express, which requires no download).
    Add cofclib to your Buddy List, then double click on cofclib to send a message to the reference staff.

  • MSN Messenger (or Web Messenger, which requires no download.)
    Add cofclib@hotmail.com to your Contact List, then double click on cofclib to send a message to the reference staff.

  • Yahoo! Messenger (or Yahoo Web Messenger, which requires no download).
    Add cofclib to your Friends List, then double click on cofclib to send a message to the reference staff.

How do I begin an "IM a Librarian" session?
Add our screenname cofclib to your AOL, MSN or Yahoo contact list (for MSN, our e-mail address is cofclib@hotmail.com). Double click on our screen name in your contact list to send a message to the reference staff.

When is "IM a Librarian" available?
This service is available during the research/information desk's hours of operation. The research/information desk hours can be found on the calendars available here (they are the ones listed in red).

Our intended audience for this service is College of Charleston students, faculty and staff.

What is the library's privacy policy for this service?
Chat transcripts will not be saved. Moreover, the library will not maintain a contact list of patron screennames.

The service is intended to offer brief reference assistance. Those seeking more extensive research assistance will be encouraged to schedule a research consultation with a reference librarian.
