How do I locate books and articles?

Reading Citations

a citation is a reference to a magazine article, book, book chapter, or other publication.

to find these in the library catalog, you need to search the title of the magazine or journal or the title of the book. note: do not use the article or chapter title

citations to articles >> books >> chapters in books

articles
citations to journal, magazine, or newspaper articles will include some of the following "elements":

  • author
  • article title
  • journal or magazine title
  • volume number (and sometimes issue number) of the journal or magazine
  • date of publication
  • section or column number (for newspaper citations)
  • page numbers

books
citations to books may include the following:

  • author or book editor
  • title of book, anthology, or collection
  • title of book chapter or article in collection
  • date of publication
  • publisher and place of publication

book chapters
citations to book chapters will also include the title of the chapter
