Library Policy #34: Computers for Use by College of Charleston Affiliates and Friends of the Library

1.0 Scope

This policy covers the policies for use of the numbered computers in the Research Information area that are connected to the coin/bill operated printer in the Addlestone Library.  The computers located in the book stacks are intended solely for the purpose of checking the library catalog.

2.0 Definitions

College of Charleston affiliates are persons connected to institutions that have programs or agreements with the College of Charleston or the Addlestone Library.  Friends of the Addlestone Library are persons who are currently supporting the College of Charleston Friends of the Library.  Section 3.0 of this policy (Eligibility) outlines the major groups affiliated with the College of Charleston.

3.0 Eligibility

Computer access is provided for the following groups:

Persons with a current College of Charleston Library borrowing card may use the numbered computers in the Research Information area.  Members of the following groups are eligible for borrowing cards (for a complete list consult Library Policy # 15: Borrowing Policy. http://www.cofc.edu/~library/frequent/pol15.html)

 

  • CALC (Charleston Academic Library Consortium):  Persons currently affiliated with the Citadel, Medical University of South Carolina, Trident Technical College, Charleston Southern University, or Charleston School of Law
  • PASCAL (Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries)— Persons currently affiliated with a PASCAL institution—members and partners http://pascalsc.org/public/members_and_partners.htm
  •  Marine Resources affiliates who have a Marine Resources or College of Charleston library borrowing card
  • Participants in all College of Charleston outreach programs eligible for Cougar Cards
  • Academic Magnet Students
  • Ashley Hall juniors and seniors
  • Charleston County School of the Arts
  • Other high schools with agreements for advanced students
  • American College for the Building Arts
  • Gibbes Museum of Art staff
  • Friends of the Library
  • Persons Serving on College of Charleston Advisory Boards who request a library borrowing card
  • Visiting Scholars (see 3.1.3)
  • Retired College of Charleston faculty
  • Participants in College of Charleston Elder Hostel program
  • Participants in the College of Charleston’s Center for Creative Retirement

3.1.2
      Persons who need temporary access to the library collections of the Addlestone library, and faculty and speakers who are visiting other professors or giving presentations at the College will be given access to the computers by a reference librarian.  It is necessary to obtain verification for College of Charleston visitors.

3.1.3
Anyone who is over eighteen years of age who wishes to use the computers may become a Friend of the Addlestone Library.  Interested persons may apply at the Circulation desk.  

3.1.4
Visiting scholars are persons who do not have permanent residences in the local area and are working on major research projects. Research is normally related to the completion of a dissertation for a post college degree or program and/or a research subject specifically related to our collections.   Visiting scholars must send a letter of introduction from their department chair to the Assistant Dean of Public Services.

3.1.5
      Parents and families of incoming students to the College of Charleston will be given access to the computers during orientation programs and College of Charleston family programs.

 

3.1.6
      All other persons may use the computers at the main Charleston County Public Library or one of its 16 branch locations.

4.0 General Use

4.1.1

All eligible persons wishing to use the numbered computers in the Research Information area must first register for a borrowing card at the Circulation desk

4.1.2

All persons using the machines are expected to comply with library policies including the policy forbidding eating and the use of cell phones.

4.1.3

College of Charleston students may use the numbered computers in the Research Information area.  If a registered borrower is waiting, the student will be asked to move to an open machine elsewhere.  However, in cases in which there are not other available machines, College of Charleston students will be given priority.

5.0 Staff Assistance

5.1.1

The Addlestone Library computers are monitored by the library and College staff.

5.1.2

All persons needing assistance should ask for help at the Research and Information desk.

5.1.3

Computer hours (1 – 12 only) are the same as those of the Research and Information desk. Service priority is given to College of Charleston students, faculty and staff.

5.1.4

The self service environment presupposes that the person has a basic knowledge of computers.

5.1.5

Computers are provided as a courtesy to College of Charleston affiliates and Friends of the Library. Users who violate library polices, including the Problem Behavior Policy # 13, will be asked to leave and may be banned from using the library.

6.0 Restrictions

6.1.1

Use of the computers to view pornographic sites shall be construed as sexual harassment. Violators will be approached by Public Safety and asked to leave the building and the person may be permanently banned from using the library.

6.1.2

The machines may not be used for VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) as a substitute for a phone.

6.1.3

Any person seen to be hitting, permanently altering or mishandling the machines will be approached and the matter will be handled by a Public Safety officer.

7.0 Printing

7.1.1

Users may print to a cash/coin operated public printer.

7.1.2

Instructions for printing are posted on the printer. If the printer is broken, the user may need to save the document or e-mail the document to another site. The library is not responsible for malfunctioning equipment.
