2.0 Guidelines

2.1 A basic responsibility of the Special Collections Department is to acquire, preserve, and make accessible rare and desirable material in the book and manuscript collection. As is the case in most rare book and special collections libraries, the materials in Special Collections do not generally circulate and must be used under proper supervision in the Special Collections area.

2.2 If it is not feasible for a patron to consult the material in the Special Collections Department, it is advised that the requested material be either photocopied (if possible) or obtained from another source, such as interlibrary loan.

3.0 Special Arrangements

3.1 Arrangements may be made for faculty members to use materials from Special Collections in the library when the Special Collections Department is closed. Permission must be secured in advance and precautions taken to safeguard the material.

3.2 Every effort will be made to order a circulating copy of books or other material needed by a faculty member. When possible, books should be ordered through library funds available to the departments. When circulating copies of a book cannot be obtained, faculty members may be granted special short-term loan privileges for material that is still in print
