Collection Assessments

Approval Plans

Blackwell North America Approval Plan
Weekly the library receives a group of current English-langauge books from Blackwell/North America for review. Every Friday a new shipment of books is placed on the approval plan shelves in Collection Development for faculty to inspect. If you want the library to keep a book, place a blue KEEP slip inside the book; or, if you think the book should be returned, put a red RETURN slip inside.

Each approval shipment remains on the shelves for two weeks. After this time, Head of Collection Development makes decisions about those items which have not been tagged with a KEEP or RETURN slip. On average, the library retains approximately 90% of the approval plan books.

Books are then passed to the Cataloging Department unless they need to be sent to the bindery. Depending on the volume of workload, books are usually cataloged within a week's time and are on the shelves within three weeks.

You may mark books with NOTIFY slips if you want to be informed when the book is cataloged. When the book is ready you will receive a message to pick it up at the Circulation Desk where it will be held for one week. Books not picked up will be shelved in stacks.

Foreign Approval Plans
The library maintains three foreign approval plans with Aux Amateurs de Livres (French), Casalini Libri (Italian), Harrassowitz (German), and Puvill Libros (Spanish)

Any questions regarding the approval plan books may be resolved by calling Collection Development at 843.953.8009.

Government Documents

The Addlestone Library is a selective depository for Federal Documents. We receive 14% of the Federal Depository documents distributed by the Government Printing Office (GPO) in the Federal Depository Library Program.

The library is also a full depository for South Carolina State Depository documents which are distributed by the South Carolina State Library.

All depository documents at the Addlestone Library are integrated into the library's collections. Please call Government Documents in Technical Services at (843) 953-8009 for more information.

Journals/Serials

Serials include periodicals, newspapers, annuals, journals, proceedings and numbered monographic series. Unlike book requests, the library receives serial order requests during the Fall of each year. Upon approval of next year's budget (usually in April), the Dean of Libraries solicits recommendations for new serial titles from the academic departments. Consideration should be given to the reputation of the issuing organization, the language of the serial, the availability of indexing, and cost. Faculty may find certain guides like Katz's Magazines For Libraries helpful when choosing new serials. This work contains reviews for many journals. The academic departments submit their requests on Serial Request Forms in rank order. Serial Request Forms are available from the Collection Development Department.

Serial Request Forms are sent from the academic departments to the head of Collection Development Department who forwards them to the appropriate Library Liaison for review. Library Liaisons review the information on the requests and notify the academic departments concerning availability and price discrepancies. Following this review the Serial Request Forms are forwarded to the libraries' Collection Development Committee. It is the responsibility of this committee to determine whether the new serial requests adhere to the selection criteria and to make sure that new serials are distributed equitably using the available funding. Each Fall the Dean of Libraries notifies the academic departments of new serials ordered by the library.

All of the journals the library owns can be found in the College of Charleston Library Catalog. Printed copies of the Journal List are kept at the Reference Desk.
